Introduction to NDM: reading and blog task

Tasks:

1) Read the first two articles. Write one paragraph on each summing up the key aspects.
2) Now read the A2 A* essay. Why do you think it was so successful?
3) Finally, answer this question in a well developed paragraph on your blog: How has digital media changed your life in the last 5 years (for positive or negative)?

1)
a) This article speaks about how school life and home life are different when it comes to technology and digital world. The researches wanted to find out wether the digital media has changed the way the youth are growing up and learning in school in comparison to the past where this technology did not exist. The key problem was privacy and the legal issues coming to researching young people because it obviously must be done under the parents consent and also the kids might change their normal behaviour and therefore not give accurate results. However they found out that although parents and older members of society think that the youth and the technology is a terrible mix because there was an example the researches said that some boys in the class talked about pornography but there was no evidence of that and the agenda that cyber bullying is a myth was further fueled.

b) This second article was talking about the new app Periscope which is simply a live-streaming app which was bought by Twitter. It speaks about the benefits and the dangers of it. The advantages were that it brought upon a new way and quick way of spreading news because it's instant and it's a live stream therefore it is happening as you are watching. The disadvantages were the privacy issues for example one could accidentally show their credit card details and they would end up losing money. Another disadvantage was that some users started recording box office and pay per view shows and because the app is for free, this acted as almost like piracy and the production companies ended up losing a lot of money for it. Although Periscope has a strict guideline and would end the streams of users who violate these guidelines, it's still a recurring issue.

2) The A2 A* essay was brilliant and very impartial, there was no clear bias toward any argument and both arguments weighed up the same. The writer clearly showed that they researched about Spotify and has researched other music streaming apps too, this showed great initiative.

3) The digital media has most certainly changed my life in the past 5 years. I have access to information and websites and it feels like everything is at the tips of my fingertips. I recently started a shop using the Depop app to sell clothes and shoes and it has made contacting buyers very easy and the app has also helped me find and buy garments which are rare and that I really wanted. I also use Apple Music which in my opinion is better than Spotify because of the clean interface and more music is available than on Spotify. It has also helped me contact my old friends in Qatar as I used to live there before I moved here in 2010. It's been a very positive influence on my life and it will continue to do so.
