The Impact of New/Digital Media

Music Industry: New technology has destroyed the music industry because CD/records sales was what was making them the money. With the emergence of new technologies, streaming is the new thing and people have preferred that to CDs because it saves storage space and is usually much cheaper. iTunes was the beginning of this as Apple introduced a new way of listening to music and that saw a dramatic decrease in sales of CDs and records. Companies like Blockbuster have been declared bankrupt and bust because of this as they relied on CDs and DVDs and as there's been a decrease in interest in both subjects, they lost a lot of money.

Another impact of New/digital media on the music industry which is again a negative one is piracy. Copies of an album or a soundtrack would surface on the world wide web and people have access to it almost for free. This is highly illegal as it is basically stealing and costs the production, distribution companies and the artist themselves a whole load of money. One way in which the music industry has tackled this is by announcing the release of a new track or album just a few hours before the release because the album would be kept a secret therefore no leaks would occur as only a few people would know about it. This generates hype and a lot of money for the production companies.

Televison: The television industry has also had a negative effect due to new and digital media. People living in urban areas have lost time for recreation and entertainment and don't have much time to be sitting and watching screens. As there's been a dramatic increase in smartphones and tablets, people have preferred those to large screen TVs to watch their favourite show as it is a lot more convenient especially if they live in densely populated urban areas as there is not much time to have fun and work. However, interestingly though television set sales have not decreased to a huge extent which shows that they are still essential devices in a household and that people have more disposable income to be able to afford a television set, a smartphone and possibly a tablet in an urban area.

Another factor would be that some channels completely rely on their audience and in this example, BBC 3 have a youth demographic and as these young people have been the biggest users of the Internet, they have started to use smartphones and tablets to watch their shows and the BBC have quickly reacted to that by shutting down the BBC 3 channel and having it streaming online only. This has regained the target audience as it is in a place where it suits them best.

Film industry: Similar problems to the music industry have been raised from new and digital media because they work almost side to side and are very similar in some aspects. The film industry until late 2000s have relied on DVD and cinema sales. The DVD industry has had a huge hit but not as bad as the CD which has completely collapsed. The emergence of film streaming websites such as Netflix has shown a new way of watching films because it is more convenient as it is available on smartphones, tablets and laptops and it's cheaper than other options such as iTunes movies which you would need to buy films for the price of having a Netflix for a whole year and Netflix has hundreds of films which proves more convenient.

Magazines and newspapers: Newspapers in particular have taken a huge hit because they have moved on to apps on smartphones and electronically. Software developers have found newfound wealth by digitising newspapers and making them available online. New apps were set up in order to hold electronic newspapers in which users would have to pay a subscription in order to get them. This has been seen as very beneficial as it is more environmentally friendly.

Another impact on magazines and newspapers was Twitter. It is a micoblogging website wheres news is spread in a matter of seconds as it is very easy to share posts and it usually gathers a lot of pace. There are more than 310 million active users. This is very popular amongst young people too as they are more keen on technology than older members of society.

Social interaction: The internet has certainly had impact on us humans and it massively effects our everyday life. We have social media websites such as Facebook which helps us connect with friends from present and past. Instagram, helps us to post pictures on the internet in very easy steps. Twitter, an easy micro blogging site which helps users post opinions and share thoughts on the web. Snapchat helps us take and send pictures within seconds. There's eBay which helps us almost start up a business and start selling and buying whatever you want. There's now Uber which helps us connect with a taxi driver so we can get to places.
